How I Imagine Pablo Neruda Would Celebrate My Birthday...

I'm celebrating a birthday today and have Pablo Neruda on my mind.

I found this great image of Pablo Neruda while searching through the archives of old LIFE magazines.

It's one of my favorite things I've seen in a long time.

I think if I were having a birthday party in my dreams, this is how Pablo would dress.

This is the image for Bogota's 2008 Book Fair, but this is how I feel when I read Neruda.

In my dreams, Neruda still visits.  And in my birthday party dream, Emily always arrives with a gift.

  1. Happy Birthday! May Emily Dickinson still arrive with many surprises, all good, for you this year.

  2. Have a great day, birthday-mate.

  3. Happy Birthday to you...

  5. Happy Birthday, Kelli.

Great pictures. Who cannot love Neruda?

  6. Happy birthday! This post is altogether charming. :)

  7. Happy birthday, sweetie! Hope it is wonderful and brings you many good things!

  8. Happy birthday from the virtual world. Although we've never met, I follow your blog daily. It inspires my own writing. Cheers to you from snowy Colorado!!

  9. Happy Birthday! I adore the photographs, as well as the idea of peopling your birthday party with Neruda and Dickinson. Enjoy your day, and the next 364, for that matter.

  10. HBTY!

One of my favorite photos of Neruda, which I wasn't able to find online with a Google Image search, is of him standing holding an enormous seashell, a conch shell or something similar, in his arms. The shell is the size of a cello. The photo, if I remember right, is by Jill Krementz.

  11. Happy Birthday, Kelli! What great images you've collected here. May the coming year be full of surprise, intrigue, and celebration.

  12. Happy Birthday! Just stumbled across your blog and have already subscribed. I hope at one of your future birthday parties Emily Dickinson jumps out of the cake.

  13. Happy Birthday, Kelli! Hope you had a terrific day. :)

  14. happy belated-- i believe the seashell photograph referred to in the comment board is in Kremintz's book The Writers Desk.... i came across this and also had dreamed of neruda last night! perhaps you'll be interested in becoming a part of the red poppy garden- they are making a movie on pablo and up to some really wonderful things:
