Gazing into the Abyss

Excellent essay written by Christian Wiman (editor of Poetry) in American Scholar.  Read it here.
The sudden appearance of love
and the galvanizing prospect of death
lead a young poet back to poetry and
a"hope toward God"
"It is the same with us and God," she [Simone Weil] says. "Every separation is a link." . . .It has taken three events, each shattering in its way, for me to recognize both the full beauty, and the final insufficiency, of Weil's image.

  1. I'm so glad you enjoyed this essay! We loved it on the Scholar staff. And it required very little editing--the rare case of a poet with superb grammar skills (and yes, I say that as a poet).

  2. Yes, I thought it was one of the best essays I've read all year. Really incredible.

Always love to hear from you...and the anonymous option is open for those feeling shy.
