Clifton, honored poet from Buffalo, dies : Home: The Buffalo News

Just heard the sad news that poet Lucille Clifton died today. She was 73.

Here's one of my favorite poems by her:

Homage to My Hips
these hips are big hips.
they need space to
move around in.
they don't fit into little
petty places. these hips
are free hips.
they don't like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
i have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top

  1. So sad. I saw her read at SAL last year. She still had a lot of spunk, but you could tell she was ailing. I love the hips poem. I also love the one titled "Wishes for Sons." And the one that ends "here lies here lies here lies."

  2. So sad to hear this. I heard her give a beautiful short talk at AWP in Chicago last year, as part of the Gwendolyn Brooks tribute on the Friday night of the conference. The audience gave her a standing ovation when she finished.

  4. What a way to find out. But thank you. She was a major presence earlier in my life & others here in the DC-area. She was something. (And not just the writing...)
